Be one of the 40% who find a better life after trauma. You are seeing how our seven group members are doing it, and you can do it as well. Actually, it only takes one thing: persistence.
But once you get unstuck, it is time to build the new life you have dreamed of. Like Ben’s father, Major Hal, you can find a “mission” and build toward it. Fortunately, as good as human beings are at overcoming trauma, they are even better at building. Look at your own life and the lives of anyone you know. When you (they) are not dealing with stress (traumatic or otherwise), how do they spend their time?
They are doing one of two things: “playing,” or building a social or physical structure around themselves so they have time and resources to “play.” They build educations; they build families; they build careers; they build homes; and they build dreams. Humans are builders. And building is the bulk of most of our stories.
Any person’s story, fictional or true, has conflict. Watch a commercial for paper towels, and you will see conflict (e.g. a child spills red drink on white carpet, and the parent has a problem to solve: getting that stain out). Conflict is the “engine” that drives story; thus, we see it in art that tells stories. As humans, the creators of life and art, conflict is to be expected. Instead of looking upon conflict as something to be avoided, it’s more realistic to recognize it as part of everyone’s “story.” The brave work of coping with life’s puzzles is only meaningful if it leads to something with meaning. To move from “Stuck” to “Unstuck,” trauma victims need to find meaning by building a life that has balance and reward. It is now time to consider building methods.
In the next chapter, we outline a framework in which the methods of behavioral science are applied to the building of dreams. Science’s philosophy and methodology have a wildly successful track record in understanding nature and enhancing lives. The methods of science have solved—and we hope will continue to solve—problems thought too difficult to even address. In Chapter 10, we maintain that those methods, when applied to human behavior, can solve the big problems of any life. The technology emanating from behavioral science can improve the self-discipline, focus, and clarity needed to achieve any aspiration. And it’s not rocket science, either.
Actually, it’s behavioral science.
